Third Octet began serving clients within Canada in 2007 and, in a matter of months, Third Octet had evolved significantly, forming strategic relationships with clients and vendors that had reach across our borders and oceans. Why? We solve real business problems. We create and restore harmony.

Recognizing a void in the marketplace, three colleagues set out on a mission. Huddled over coffee, the path was laid – we’d start an organization, an organization solely based on valuable consulting … consulting that focused on what we knew best, technology. Although, we decided our consulting approach had to be different. We had to be ourselves. As a small organization, we understood that we could not afford to have two faces – we had to be the same individuals at the workplace as we were outside of the workspace. We had to treat our clients as we’d treat our friends; after all, our objective, or our approach to consulting, was to form long lasting relationships with our clients; relationships that weren’t one-sided but, rather, mutually beneficial. That was the key, our intentions, our driver.

We thought the difficult part had passed. We were surely mistaken. Our name posed the biggest obstacle; a road block most would succumb to. Hours, days and weeks passed – every choice was either plagued with existing trademarks, too similar to existing organizations, made absolutely no sense, or was too ridiculous to even consider as a name. As our spirits dwindled, our name miraculously showed itself – Third Octet.

There were three of us that started this company, and we felt the need to reflect that in the company’s name. The three of us agreed that we did not want the name to be overly technical, but, rather, a name that could attract to both sides of the fence – the technically minded, and the business minded – and, more so, stand out from the crowd, avoiding the common use of ‘technologies’ or ‘solutions’. Third Octet does just that.

What does it mean? That depends on your perspective.

If you say ‘Third Octet’ to a technically minded individual, especially one that deals with networks, they’ll understand in a moment that the third octet represents one of four octets in the makeup of an IP (Internet Protocol) address as an octet is a grouping of 8 bits, or eight ones and zeros. If the third octet happened to be absent from an IP address, network communication would seize, failing entirely actually – it just would not be possible.

From this perspective, Third Octet operates in the same sense – we strive to build lasting relationships based heavily on communications, advice, and strategic consulting. We provide essential elements to your infrastructure and organizational needs, just as the third octet in 192.168.10.1 does to network communications. Without these combinations, things just may not work.

On the other hand, if you say ‘Third Octet’ to a CEO or Director, the first thing that typically comes to mind, unless they are from a technical background, is music as an octet is a musical ensemble consisting of eight instruments or a music composition written for eight instruments. Third Octet, through our strategic and valuable consulting, can restore the ‘harmony’ of your infrastructure through alignment with your business demands.

On the other, other hand, a little known fact exists, or exception, on the definition of octet. Octet can also be known as a group of three bits that represent eight possible values; for instance, the groups of basic permission bits of many file systems for Unix-like platforms.
